ADVENT WINDOW
ICONS
ART COMMISSION AT ST GEORGES SCHOOL BATTERSEA
November 2020 heading towards Christmas in a Lockdown mode I was given a commission to do one of the Advent Windows by the NINE ELMS ARTS MINISTRY . The rail in and around Battersea Power Station and neighbouring area encompassed shops (although not open in Lockdown), schools and churches of area. The commission at St Georges CE School, Battersea. Being a church school it was happy to have a nativity scene .
The window could only be seen from the road, about 10 meters away and not up close because of safeguarding of the school. The window was literally a glass door and side window. There were also bushes and trees obscuring the sight of vision to the space. I was concerned that the restricted vision would not have any impact to highlight Betsy's (the Arts Minister for Nine Elms) theme of LIGHT and HOPE.
I asked the Principal if she would be happy for me to extend my murals onto the walls and she was happy with that. It meant I could work large and make a visual impact for the community to enjoy and hopefully find some solace and enjoyment through during the hard Lockdown.
There was a tight time frame of just two weeks but I was confindent I could do it. The school gave me a room to do the painting, giving me the title ARTIST IN RESIDENCE which delighted me. I also worked from my sunroom over the weekends on the other two murals. There was the central mural which fitted over the origingal door and window of the nativity scene done in a modern iconogrchaaphy style. And a further mural on each side of the building, of the two charities that I fully endose and support.
One was the Homeless Shelter, GLASS DOOR where I am a key co-ordinator for St Marys Church Battersea and the other is the CATS AND DOGS HOME (BATTERSEA). I was able to bring a bit of fun to the second mural by donning it BETHLEHEM DOGS AND CATS HOME and did it a Biblical style of buildings and township. The HOMELESS SHELTER was under a tourag tent with the nomads taking refuge.
The NATIVITY SCENE called LOCKDOWN INN also brought a smile to the passer-bys of the community who gave me the thumbs up when they saw me out in the elements doing the finishing touches to the work.
After doing this commission Igraduated to doing ICONS. This came about after taking place in the Advent Window Caldendar Trail for Nine Elms Arts Ministry. and I decided to do MODERN ICONOGRAPHY. The message was to bring LIGHT into the DARKNESS especially at the time of Lockdown and help encourage and inspire others to HOPE FOR THE GOODNESS OF GOD to prevail.
